It occurs in the mountains of Central Europe in the area of the Alps and Carpathians (Tatras, Eastern and Southern Carpathians). It grows in forests with the participation of European larch, most often at altitudes ranging from 1400 to 2500 meters above sea level. It is a slow-growing and long-lived tree, very resistant to low temperatures, winds, and pests. Larch wood was once used in various ways, and the seeds, known as nuts, were used as food and medicine. Oil was distilled from the shoots and resin. Due to intensive logging, the range of the species has significantly decreased in the past. Larch is one of the species that are rather rarely cultivated outside its natural range, mainly due to difficulties in obtaining seeds and its slow growth.
